Beyoncé: Lemonade (Is She Sour Or Is She Sweet?)

On April 23, 2016, in true Beyoncé Giselle Knowles-Carter form, our Queen B dropped another visual album entitled “Lemonade” virtually out of nowhere. Yes, we have been waiting for a release date since Beyoncé’s “controversial” Superbowl performance where she debuted the first single off of her Lemonade album entitled “Formation”. The day before the Superbowl performance, Beyoncé also released a music video for the single as well. In this music video, Beyoncé addressed many social issues plaguing the United States and where she stood on these matters. Many people felt like the Superbowl was neither the time nor the place to perform such a politically driven song….My question to them is, why not?

screen-shot-2016-02-06-at-1-39-02-pmArtists throughout history have always been the ones to call change to action, regardless of the medium they chose to use in order to get a point across. So why should Beyoncé be any different? If Donald Trump can use his celebrity platform to run for President of the United States, why can’t Beyoncé use her music to speak about her experience here in the US as a woman of color? Honestly, there is not answer…..So let B be free to express herself in HER art.

Besides the political aspect of this visual album, Beyoncé opens up about her relationship with he husband   Jay-Z, and BOY did she have a lot to say! over the last few years, rumors about the couples splitting and Jay-Z’s infidelities have been circulating. Flashback to 2014, when Beyoncé’s sister Solange assaulted Jay in an elevator at the Met Gala. Gossip magazines at the time suspected that Solange found Jay-Z flirting and getting a little too close to a fellow Gala goer and decided to do something about it (Via a few quick hard blows to the head. Remind me not to mess with her sister!)

On Beyonce’s first self-entitled visual album, Beyoncé touched upon some of the rocky roads she and Jay had faced. Little did we know that this sneak-peek into the couple marriage was just the tip of the iceberg. On the Lemonade album, each song seemed to be different aspects of her 12 step self-healing process. Each song paints a picture of what Beyoncé was thinking as she began to take a cold hard look at her relationship with her beloved husband. Many of the lyrics left us all side-eyeing Jay-z and questioning our loyalty to the rap mogul.

Don’t take it from me, check out Lemonade on Tidal today and decide for yourself.
Would you put up tumblr_o67yte8iKe1r51by8o1_500.jpgwith Jay-Z’s BS or would you take your smexy self and more on to greener pastures?

Rihanna: Needed Me (Caution Graphic)

Todt-rihanna-cover-art-roy-nachumay Rihanna released her music video for Needed Me off her latest album entitle Anti. My first reaction to this video is…..WOW. Not only is is visually stunning, but it also tells an amazing story about love and betrayal. One thing is for sure, Rihanna was the wrong woman to scorn!

In the beginning of the video, RiRi is depicted holding a gun in a see through all white dress overlooking a large body of water. She seems to be deep in thought and clearly thinking about how this man presumably dicked her over. Based on Rihanna’s video track record of extreme violence against her wrongdoers, SHE WAS HAVING NONE OF IT! Screen Shot 2016-04-20 at 10.19.04 PM With a solemn face and her posse behind her, Rihana sets forth to exact revenge. As she enters a strip club full of half naked women and men throwing stacks of money at them, I can’t help but think…is this what her real life is like? Or is she merely playing a character? Another part of me feels like Screen Shot 2016-04-20 at 10.18.33 PM.pngthis is Rihanna alter ego that may exist in some other badass universe apart from our own.

The Rihanna in this video is very reminiscent of the RiRi we saw in one of her previous videos Bitch Better Have My Money, where Rihanna makes is know that she isn’t the type of person you should double cross. CLEARLY her “friend” in this video did not get that memo, or somehow skipped over that very important detail because the next thing you know he is not longer staring longingly into some random strippers eyes…..he is not looking down the barrow of Rihanna’s gun. Sucks dude….

A Breathless Choir

Every so often when surfing the web, I come across a story or video that truly touches my heart and soul. This morning the piece that almost brought me to tears involved a video created by Philips, a Dutch technology company headquartered in Amsterdam with primary divisions focused in the areas of electronics, healthcare, and lighting.

In this video, individuals with breathing disabilities who love to sing, but are unable to because of their breathing issues, were brought together in order to assist them in finding their voices again.

Check it out:

I love seeing videos such as this one. I also love that companies are starting to see the value of experiential marketing. This video wasn’t created just so promote one specific product; it was designed to showcase what type of company Philips is and with a tag line stating “Innovation and you,” one can’t help but wonder how else this dynamic company will be making strides to push innovation.

Companies who are creating this type of experience are changing people’s lives. In the following video, the thought process and research that went into this project can be seen. The products, emotions, and care that helped make this all possible is just astounding.

As a marketer, I want to work with companies such as this one. Corporate global responsibility is a big deal now. A company can not escape it, and when a corporation acknowledges these amazing things happen. People’s lives change, the world becomes a better place, and we can get back to being human. So much of our humanity is lost to technology, but when humanity and technology can come together to make, peoples live better, its a beautiful thing.

I’m just rambling and gushing at this point, haha but I just wanted to share these videos about this project and encourage my fellow marketers and communications professionals to create meaningful marketing materials. We shouldn’t just be driving sales; we should be driving humanity to become better.

Until Next time, Take chances, make mistakes, get messy!!

Ariana Grande nails it!

Grande Foster 23On April 8th, 2015, Ariana Grande decided to cover the late Whitney Houston “I have
nothing” while performing in Inglewood California.

I can honestly say that this performance was legendary! I mean….no it wasn’t how Ms. Houston would have performed it, but it was pretty darn close!

A nervous Grande pushes her hair back and tells her audience that she has a special guess who will be performing on of her favorite songs with her. She announces that award-winning singer/songwriter David Foster will be performing with her. Grande then goes on to recalls how when she was younger “I have nothing” was her go-to song for ANY occasion. She sings it in Gay bars, karaoke bars….almost anywhere where she could perform it.

Grande Foster

During the entirety of the performance, the pint-sized song bird perched herself on the edge of a baby grand piano and sang her heart out. (With what seemed like minimal effort on her part). Grande appeared to be right at home beside the Grammy, Emmy and Canadian Hall of Fame inductee David Foster as he played the piano and encouraged her with enthusiastic hand motions.

I literally got chills the first time I watched this video. GET INTO IT! COMMON SONGBIRD! SING THAT SONG!! (That was weird I’m sorry haha, but that was my literal reactions haha)
